Meeting with American WWII veterans and students from Portbail
Raymond Sylvester, who turns 95 later this summer, was in France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day
Raymond Sylvester, of New Gloucester, was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army on June 6, 1944, when the allied forces landed in Normandy, France.
Raymond Sylvester, was part of the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion that supported the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions on D-Day, and eventually landed on Utah Beach a few weeks after the invasion. He was also part of the Battle of the Bulge and wound up in Germany where he and other allied soldiers liberated the Nazi death camp at Buchenwald.
After the war, Sylvester worked for the telephone company. He and his wife, Barbara, who served a lieutenant in the Army as a nurse, had four children.
